- Did you know that the bra was not patented until 1914? The bra was created by a New York socialite by the name of Mary Phelps. Phelps was tired of her cami (camisole) showing more then she opted for while wearing certain clothing. Only using a handkerchief she designed the first bra which she eventually had patented in 1914.
