Essence Magazine Convtroversy


African American Magazine Essence recent decision to hire a Caucasian Fashion Director (Ellianna Placas) has caused some major uproar. Essence known for catering to the black community from hair and skin care to finanancial and relationship advice is now receiveing backlash from those who up until now were its major supporter. Upon hearing the news former fashion editor of Essence, Michaela Angela Davis, wasted no time utilizing the social networking site Facebook to express her feelings.

"It’s with a heavy heart I’ve learned Essence Magazine has engaged a white Fashion Director. I love Essence and I love fashion. I hate this news and this feeling. It hurts, literally. The fashion industry has historically been so hostile to black people–especially women....." What are your thoughts?
